# Best Cyber Security Certification for Beginners in 2026 (Prices Checked October 2026) > Security+, ISC2 CC, the Google Cybersecurity Certificate, Cisco CCST and CyberOps, and GIAC GSEC compared on cost, study time, exam format, who each suits and the main drawback. ISC2 CC is no longer free. Source: https://playciso.com/blog/best-cyber-security-certification-for-beginners-2026 · Published: 2026-10-29 · Publisher: PlayCISO (https://playciso.com) --- Short answer: **CompTIA Security+** is the best first certification for most beginners in 2026, **ISC2 CC** or **Cisco CCST Cybersecurity** are the cheaper on-ramps, and the **Google Cybersecurity Certificate** is the most guided course. The right one depends on your budget, the job you want and whether you already work in IT. Prices below are as of October 2026. ## Which cyber security certification is best for beginners? There is no single winner, which is why AI answers and listicles disagree on the top pick. Pick by situation: - You want the credential job ads ask for: CompTIA Security+. In CyberSeek’s latest US data (May 2024 to April 2025), 70,019 job postings asked for Security+, more than any other entry-level certification. - You have little money: ISC2 CC at US$199, or Cisco CCST Cybersecurity at US$125 after Cisco Networking Academy’s free Junior Cybersecurity Analyst path. - You are starting from nothing and want a guided course: the Google Cybersecurity Certificate on Coursera, then an exam. - Your employer pays and you want depth: GIAC GSEC (US$999 per attempt; SANS training is separate and costs far more). - You already know you want a SOC job: start with Security+ and go straight on to Cisco CyberOps Associate or CompTIA CySA+. ## How do the beginner certifications compare? Costs are exam or programme prices in US dollars as of October 2026. Study time is our estimate for a newcomer studying 5 to 8 hours a week; people already in IT are usually faster. GIAC’s own entry exam, GFACT, is US$399 Sources: CompTIA’s Security+ V7 and V8 pages; ISC2’s exam pricing page and its April 2026 announcement ending One Million Certified in Cybersecurity; Coursera’s Google Cybersecurity Certificate page; Cisco’s exam pages; GIAC’s pricing page. CompTIA’s own site did not print the voucher price when we checked, so the US$439 figure comes from consistent reseller and training-provider listings after CompTIA’s mid-2026 price change. Check the issuer’s store before you pay. ## Is Security+ or ISC2 CC better for a beginner? Security+ is harder, costs more than twice as much and is far more recognised. CC is a gentler introduction to the same vocabulary (security principles, access control, network security, incident response, security operations). In CyberSeek’s data, Security+ is one of six certifications tracked in US job ads; CC is not tracked at all, which tells you how often employers name it. A practical route for career switchers is CC first to build confidence, then Security+ about three months later. If you can only pay for one exam, make it Security+. ## What changed for beginner certifications in 2026? - ISC2 CC is no longer free. ISC2 ended its One Million Certified in Cybersecurity programme to new entrants on 20 May 2026. Existing, unexpired exam codes work until 31 December 2026. - CompTIA raised voucher prices. Security+, CySA+ and PenTest+ vouchers moved from US$425 to US$439 in mid-2026. - Security+ V8 is coming. CompTIA expects SY0-801 around 17 November 2026, with more weight on AI-related risk, cloud and hybrid environments, automation and third-party risk. SY0-701 in English retires on 11 June 2027. - CySA+ V4 is current. The English CySA+ V3 exam retires on 22 December 2026. - Fortinet’s free entry certification changed. Fortinet NSE 1 replaced Fortinet Certified Fundamentals in July 2026. See our list of certifications that are still free. ## What should you practise alongside the certification? Multiple-choice exams test recall. Interviews test whether you can read a log, triage an alert and explain a decision. Pair every study block with hands-on practice. Free options include TryHackMe’s free rooms, LetsDefend’s free plan and Blue Team Labs Online’s free challenges (all listed in our [free course library](/learn)). Be clear about what that is: proof of finished hands-on work, not an industry certification. PlayCISO is not a certification body, and it does not offer full virtual-machine attack boxes; for those, TryHackMe and Hack The Box are the better choice. ## Checklist: before you book a beginner exam - Search ten job ads for the role you want in your city and note which certifications they name. - Confirm the current price and exam version on the issuer’s site (Security+ V7 or V8). - Check for discounts: student pricing, the Google certificate’s Security+ discount, employer vouchers. - Book the exam for a date 8 to 12 weeks out; a date makes study happen. - Do at least one hands-on lab per study week, and write down what you did for interviews. - Plan the next step now with the Cyber Certification Roadmap.
