# Best OT/ICS Security Training in 2026: SANS, ISA/IEC 62443, CISA and Browser Labs Compared > OT and ICS security training compared for 2026: SANS ICS410/ICS515 (GICSP, GRID), the ISA/IEC 62443 certificate program, CISA’s free ICS courses, Dragos Academy, free community courses and browser OT labs. Prices as of October 2026, a path per role, and honest trade-offs. Source: https://playciso.com/blog/best-ot-ics-security-training-2026 · Published: 2026-10-29 · Publisher: PlayCISO (https://playciso.com) --- Operational technology (OT) security training teaches you to protect the systems that run physical processes: programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), SCADA servers, historians and safety instrumented systems. The market is smaller than IT security training and splits cleanly into four kinds of option: expensive hands-on courses with a recognised credential, standards-based certificate programs, free government courses, and labs you run yourself. This guide compares them, with prices as of October 2026. ## What makes OT security training different from IT security training? Three things. First, the priorities are reversed: in a plant, safety and availability come before confidentiality, so the right answer to an incident is often “keep the process running safely”, not “pull the plug”. Second, the protocols are different and mostly unauthenticated: Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61850 and Siemens S7comm were designed for closed networks, so anyone who can reach them can often send a write command. Third, you cannot treat the network like an IT network: active scanning can crash fragile controllers, and patching may need a planned shutdown. Good OT training is therefore anchored in references that IT courses rarely cover: [NIST SP 800-82 Rev. 3](https://csrc.nist.gov/pubs/sp/800/82/r3/final) (Guide to Operational Technology Security), the ISA/IEC 62443 series, the Purdue reference model for zones and levels, and [MITRE ATT&CK for ICS](https://attack.mitre.org/matrices/ics/). If a course does not mention at least two of these, it is an IT course with a factory photo on it. ## Which OT/ICS security training is best in 2026? There is no single best option. The table compares the ones most often recommended, by who they suit and what they cost. Prices are list prices in US dollars as of October 2026 and change often; check the provider before you buy. Pick by job, not by ranking lists. GICSP is the broadest of the GIAC OT credentials and is designed to bridge IT, engineering and security. GRID is for people who will detect and respond to attacks on ICS. GCIP only makes sense in the North American power sector. The ISA/IEC 62443 certificates are the right choice if your work is designing, assessing or maintaining systems against the standard, for example as an integrator or product supplier; we explain the four certificates in [IEC 62443 training paths explained](/blog/iec-62443-training-paths-explained). A word on “top-rated” lists: we found no reliable public data ranking OT certifications by employer demand, so treat any precise ranking with suspicion. What is reliable is the pairing logic above and the price: a GIAC attempt alone is $999 as of October 2026, so if your employer is not paying, build the knowledge with free material first and buy the exam when you are ready. ## What is the right path for each role? - IT security professional moving into OT. CISA 210W series (free) → hands-on protocol labs (Modbus Attack Range, SCADA Protocol Weakness Lab) → SANS ICS410 and GICSP if you need the credential. - Control and automation engineers. ISA/IEC 62443 Fundamentals Specialist → Design or Maintenance Specialist. Practise zone and conduit design with the Purdue Model Builder and the OT Conduit Linter. - SOC analysts and incident responders. SANS ICS515 and GRID. Before that, rehearse the decisions in the OT Ransomware Lab, the HMI Alarm-Flood Lab and the OT/ICS Incident Response Checklist. - Plant operators. Short awareness sessions on removable media, remote access, and what an abnormal HMI looks like. The PLC Tamper Lab works well as a short team exercise on a shared screen. - Managers and CISOs. CISA’s one-hour manager course (FRE2115), then a tabletop on an OT ransomware scenario such as the Cold-Chain Incident War Room. ## Can digital twins and simulators replace a hardware lab? A digital twin in OT training is a software replica of a process and its control system, PLC logic, HMI screens and the physical behaviour behind them, so an attack or a wrong decision shows its physical consequence (a tank overflows, a breaker opens) without any real risk. That is the main advantage: you can run attacks, alarm floods and recovery drills repeatedly, and IT and operations staff can practise together. Simulators do not fully replace hardware. Real controllers have firmware quirks, vendor engineering software and timing that simulations approximate. A sensible mix is browser simulations for decisions and repetition, an open-source range such as GRFICS or Labshock for packet-level work, and a hardware kit or instructor-led range once you specialise. ## Is there sector-specific OT training for pharma, utilities or oil and gas? The fundamentals are the same in every sector, so most people do general OT training and add sector context. Utilities in North America add NERC CIP (SANS ICS456 and GCIP); the [Industroyer substation lab](/tools/industroyer-grid-lab) covers the IEC 104 and IEC 61850 attacks seen in Ukraine. Oil, gas and chemicals add process safety: the [TRITON lab](/tools/triton-sis-lab) and the [SIS Defense Lab](/tools/sis-defense-lab) cover attacks on safety instrumented systems. Pharma and food manufacturing add validated systems and cold chain; the [Cold-Chain Incident War Room](/tools/cold-chain-wargame) is built on a refrigeration ransomware scenario. ## Checklist: choosing OT security training - Does it cover NIST SP 800-82, ISA/IEC 62443 or MITRE ATT&CK for ICS, not just IT security with OT examples? - Is there hands-on work with real or realistic OT protocols (Modbus, DNP3, S7, IEC 104, OPC UA)? - Does it teach safe behaviour on live plants: no active scanning of fragile devices, engineering sign-off before containment? - Does it match your role: engineering (62443), defence (GRID-style), compliance (NERC CIP), or awareness? - Do you need a credential, or just the skill? If just the skill, start free. - Can you keep practising afterwards, with short labs or an open-source range? ## Frequently asked questions ### What are the top-rated industrial cybersecurity certifications? The four most often recommended are GIAC GICSP (Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional, paired with SANS ICS410), GIAC GRID (Response and Industrial Defense, paired with SANS ICS515), GIAC GCIP (Critical Infrastructure Protection, paired with SANS ICS456 for NERC CIP), and the ISA/IEC 62443 certificates from ISA (Fundamentals, Risk Assessment, Design and Maintenance Specialist, which together earn the Expert designation). GICSP is the usual first OT credential; GRID suits defenders; ISA/IEC 62443 suits engineers, integrators and asset owners who must apply the standard. ### Is there free OT security training? Yes. As of October 2026 CISA’s ICS Virtual Learning Portal offers 13 on-demand courses with no tuition (the 100W course and the 210W-1 to 210W-11 series, plus a one-hour manager course); registration needs a corporate, government, military or education email. Mike Holcomb publishes a free course of more than 25 hours on YouTube. For hands-on practice, PlayCISO has 13 free browser-based OT/ICS labs, and open-source ranges such as GRFICS and Labshock run locally. ### What is the best OT security training for someone coming from IT security? Learn the process before the protocols. Start with CISA’s free 210W series or SANS ICS310 for the basics of control systems, then the Purdue model and why availability and safety come before confidentiality. Practise on unauthenticated protocols such as Modbus and DNP3 in a lab, never on a live plant. If you need a credential, SANS ICS410 with GICSP is the common choice for IT people moving into OT. ### Which training is best for ICS incident response? SANS ICS515 (GIAC GRID) is the most complete paid course for ICS detection and response: it covers threat hunting, network security monitoring, forensics, PLC logic analysis and a full-day capstone on ICS ranges. For decision practice on a budget, branching incident labs such as PlayCISO’s OT Ransomware Lab and the OT/ICS Incident Response Checklist rehearse the questions that matter most in an OT incident: who can stop the process, whether to run manually, and when to cut the IT/OT link. ### What are the alternatives to SANS for ICS security training? ISA’s ISA/IEC 62443 certificate program for standards-based work, CISA’s free ICS courses (online, plus instructor-led and in-person courses at Idaho National Laboratory), Dragos Academy for Dragos Platform customers, free community courses such as Mike Holcomb’s, and browser or open-source labs for hands-on practice. None replaces SANS for a widely recognised hands-on credential, but together they cover most of the knowledge for a fraction of the price. ### Is online or in-person OT security training better? In-person or live virtual training is better when you want to handle real PLCs and ask questions, and SANS ICS410 and ICS515 ship hardware kits students keep. Self-paced online training is better for fundamentals, for shift workers and for global teams. A common pattern is free online fundamentals first, then one hands-on course, with short browser labs to keep skills fresh in between. _Prices and course details were checked on sans.org, giac.org, isa.org, cisa.gov and dragos.com in October 2026.
