PlayCISO vs Hack The Box (2026): Offensive Labs or Incident Decision Labs?

October 29, 2026 · PlayCISO
TL;DR

Hack The Box is the better choice for offensive security: 1,500+ hands-on labs, unguided machines, Pro Labs, defensive Sherlocks for DFIR, an in-browser Pwnbox, and practical certifications such as HTB Certified Penetration Testing Specialist. As of October 2026 it has a free tier, Labs VIP+ at $25 a month or $223 a year, and HTB Academy from $10 a month. PlayCISO is the better choice when the job is deciding rather than exploiting: incident response leads, CISOs, managers, GRC and AI security, with 139 free browser labs and scored War Room and Virtual SOC simulations, for $5 a month or $40 a year. PlayCISO has no attack VMs, no live-fire range and no industry certification.

Hack The Box is one of the best-known places to learn hacking by doing it. PlayCISO is a browser-based practice platform for the people who run security and incidents. They overlap less than the word “labs” suggests, so this comparison is mostly about which job you are training for.

What is the short answer?

If you want to become a penetration tester, red teamer or hands-on DFIR analyst, use Hack The Box. If you are, or want to be, the person who leads the incident, briefs the board, answers the regulator, or owns GRC and AI governance, use PlayCISO. If you are moving from one to the other, use both.

Where does Hack The Box win?

  • Real exploitation. Machines you have to own end to end, without a walkthrough, are the closest thing to a real engagement outside work. PlayCISO does not offer this.
  • Recognised certifications. HTB Academy lists certifications including HTB Certified Junior Cybersecurity Associate, Penetration Testing Specialist, Web Exploitation Specialist, Defensive Security Analyst and several expert-level exams, with practical assessments.
  • Pro Labs and team use. Multi-machine networks that look like corporate environments, and an Enterprise Platform with Dedicated Labs and Business CTFs; HTB’s enterprise Dedicated Labs include a purple team path.
  • DFIR practice. Sherlocks are investigation-based defensive labs.
  • Community and competition. Seasons, CTFs and a large community writing walkthroughs for retired content.

Where does PlayCISO win?

  • The decisions around the incident. The War Room runs 25 branching scenarios across 3 fictional companies and grades each call against regulatory frameworks, then an AI board questions you. The Ransom Decision Lab, Materiality Call Lab and Regulator Interview Lab drill the calls a pentest never reaches.
  • IR process, scored. The IR Playbook Lab grades the order of your response (image before wipe, eradicate before restore), adds injects and produces a shareable scorecard.
  • No setup at all. Every lab runs in the browser, including on locked-down work laptops where a VPN client is not allowed.
  • Breadth outside offence. Identity (Kerberos attacks from the defender’s side, MFA bypass), cryptography, OT/ICS (TRITON, Stuxnet reconstruction), GRC and AI security labs.
  • Price. $5 a month or $40 a year as of October 2026, and the labs are free to play.

What PlayCISO does not do

No attack boxes or target machines, no live-fire network range, no industry certification, and a much smaller community than Hack The Box. If your goal is an offensive job or an HTB certification, PlayCISO is not a substitute.

How much do they cost as of October 2026?

Hack The Box: a free account includes active machines, CTFs and Seasons, free Academy modules and Pwnbox access. Labs VIP+ is $25 a month or $223 a year (the older VIP plan is no longer sold to new subscribers). HTB Academy prices changed on 12 October 2026: Student $10 a month, Silver $30 a month or $550 a year (with two exam vouchers), Gold $95 a month or $1,400 a year. PlayCISO: free to start; Pro is $5 a month or $40 a year and is the whole product.

Who should use which?

You are…Use
Studying for a pentest job or certificationHack The Box
A SOC or DFIR analystHack The Box Sherlocks; PlayCISO Virtual SOC for triage judgement
A new incident response leadPlayCISO
A CISO or security managerPlayCISO
A pentester moving into managementBoth

Can you use both?

Many people move from one to the other over a career. A pentester who becomes a team lead or a security manager keeps Hack The Box for technical sharpness and adds decision practice when the job changes from finding the vulnerability to explaining its business impact, deciding what to disclose and running the response. Going the other way, a manager who wants to understand what attackers actually do can work through HTB Academy’s fundamentals while using PlayCISO for the leadership side. A practical split: technical depth on Hack The Box during the week, and one PlayCISO Challenge Ladder run or War Room scenario a week to rehearse the decisions. Together the two cost less than most single enterprise training seats.

Checklist

  • Is the goal exploitation skill or decision skill?
  • Can you run a VPN or VM on the machine you will practise on?
  • Do you need a recognised certification?
  • Try one free lab on each before paying.

Frequently asked questions

Is PlayCISO an alternative to Hack The Box?

Not for hacking. Hack The Box is where you practise exploitation on real machines. PlayCISO is an alternative when you want hands-on practice for incident response decisions, leadership, GRC or AI security in a browser, without VMs or VPN.

Is Hack The Box free?

Partly. As of October 2026 a free account includes weekly active machine releases, CTFs and Seasons competitions, free Academy modules and Pwnbox access. Retired machines, more Pwnbox time and the full Academy need a paid plan: Labs VIP+ is $25 a month or $223 a year, and Academy Student is $10 a month, Silver $30 a month or $550 a year.

Does Hack The Box have blue team labs?

Yes. Sherlocks are investigation-based defensive labs covering DFIR, threat intelligence and reverse engineering, and HTB Academy has defensive paths leading to HTB Certified Defensive Security Analyst. LetsDefend, a blue team platform, says it has agreed to be acquired by Hack The Box.

What are the alternatives to self-hosted vulnerable labs?

Hosted platforms remove the setup: Hack The Box (Pwnbox in the browser), TryHackMe (AttackBox in the browser), PortSwigger Web Security Academy (free hosted web labs) and, for defensive and decision practice, CyberDefenders and PlayCISO, which run entirely in the browser.

Which is better for incident response training?

For the technical investigation, Hack The Box Sherlocks. For running the incident (sequencing the response, escalation, legal, regulator, press and board decisions), PlayCISO’s IR Playbook Lab and War Room.
