Cloudflare Security Checklist: Score Your Account

This is an interactive Cloudflare security checklist. Mark 30 controls In place, Partial, Missing or N/A and get a weighted score, a score per domain and your top gaps, each with the Cloudflare documentation behind it.

Answers stay in your browser. For the reference design these controls belong to, read secure Cloudflare architecture; to practise, try the Cloudflare Security Lab.

No download, no card

A self-assessment from Cloudflare documentation, not an audit or a benchmark. It does not connect to your Cloudflare account.

1. Account access and roles

Who can log in and what they can change.

  • Two-factor authentication is required for every member (2FA Enforcement), and security keys are used for administrators.

  • Each person has at least two second factors or two security keys, and backup codes are stored safely.

  • Super Administrator is held by as few people as the business needs; others use narrower roles such as Administrator Read Only, Cloudflare Access or Audit Logs Viewer.

  • Membership is reviewed on a schedule and leavers and contractors are removed the same day.

  • Staff reach internal tools through your identity provider rather than separate local logins.

2. API tokens and credentials

The credentials that act without a human.

  • No integration uses the Global API key; it has been replaced by API tokens.

  • CI/CD and integrations use account API tokens rather than tokens tied to one person.

  • Each token has only the permissions it needs on only the zones or accounts it needs.

  • Tokens carry an expiry and client IP address filtering where the caller's address is known.

  • Repositories and pipelines are scanned for leaked Cloudflare tokens, and you know how to revoke one.

3. Zero Trust Access and devices

Internal tools behind identity, not behind obscurity.

  • Internal web applications are behind Cloudflare Access with Allow policies that name the people or groups allowed.

  • Bypass policies are rare, scoped to one path, tested before production and reviewed; Service Auth is used where possible.

  • Applications behind Access validate the Cf-Access-Jwt-Assertion token and refresh the signing keys when they rotate.

  • Sensitive applications require a healthy managed device through the Cloudflare One Client and device posture checks, verified before enforcement.

  • Machine access uses Service Auth (service tokens or client certificates) and not shared user logins.

4. Origin and network exposure

Make Cloudflare the only way in.

  • Public hostnames are proxied, and DNS-only records (SPF, TXT and others) have been checked for origin addresses.

  • Origin IP addresses were rotated after onboarding, since historical DNS records may contain the old ones.

  • Where possible, origins connect through Cloudflare Tunnel with inbound traffic blocked at the firewall.

  • Origins that are not behind a tunnel use Full (strict) encryption and Authenticated Origin Pulls, with your own certificate where you need account-level assurance.

  • The firewall allows only Cloudflare address ranges as an additional layer.

5. DNS and certificates

Integrity of the names people trust.

  • DNSSEC is enabled on zones that use Cloudflare DNS and the DS record is published at the registrar.

  • When onboarding a domain, DNSSEC was disabled at the previous provider before nameservers changed.

  • Zones use Full or Full (strict) encryption mode; none is on Flexible or Off.

  • Changes to DNS records are visible in a log someone reviews, and ownership of the registrar account is protected like the Cloudflare account.

  • You have a written step list for a hijacked record or a changed nameserver.

6. WAF, rate limiting and logging

Edge protection and evidence.

  • The Cloudflare Managed Ruleset is deployed on public applications and its matches are reviewed in Security Events.

  • Custom rules protect sensitive paths (admin, login, APIs) and their order has been checked.

  • Login, password-reset and expensive API endpoints have rate limiting rules with sensible characteristics, thresholds and mitigation timeouts.

  • Applications still enforce their own limits, lockouts and MFA behind the edge.

  • Account audit logs are exported to your SIEM or logging system (Logpush or API) so you can look back beyond 90 days.

Your top gaps

Mark controls Partial or Missing and the highest-weighted gaps appear here, with the reason each matters.

TL;DR

What this is

5 points
  • A self-assessment of 30 Cloudflare controls in 6 domains: account access and roles, API tokens and credentials, Zero Trust Access and devices, origin and network exposure, DNS and certificates, and WAF, rate limiting and logging.
  • Mark each control In place, Partial, Missing or N/A. You get a weighted 0 to 100 score overall, a score per domain and your top gaps.
  • Each control carries a short reason and a link to the Cloudflare documentation it comes from. Our own reasoning is labelled PlayCISO practice.
  • Runs in your browser; answers stay in local storage and nothing is sent to PlayCISO. Markdown and PDF export of the report is available with a paid plan.
  • It is not an audit and not a benchmark; it connects to nothing in your account.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Cloudflare Security Checklist cover?

It covers 30 controls in 6 domains drawn from Cloudflare documentation: 2FA and roles, API tokens versus the Global API key, Zero Trust Access policies and device posture, Tunnel and origin lockdown, DNSSEC and encryption modes, the WAF and rate limiting, and audit logs.

How is the score calculated?

Each control has a weight of 1 to 3. In place counts as full weight, Partial as half, Missing as zero, and N/A is left out. A domain score is the weighted share of its answered controls and the overall score is the weighted share across all answered controls. Unanswered controls are not scored.

Does the tool connect to my Cloudflare account?

No. Nothing connects to Cloudflare and no tokens are requested. You answer from what you know and the score is computed in your browser, so it is safe to use while reviewing a real account.

Are my answers stored or sent anywhere?

Answers are kept in this browser's local storage and are not sent to PlayCISO. The Markdown and PDF reports are built in your browser.

Why is the Global API key weighted so heavily?

Cloudflare says the Global API key has access to all of a user's resources with the user's full permissions, cannot be limited by IP address or expiry, and is not recommended for new customers. A leaked key therefore has the widest possible reach, so the checklist gives its replacement the top weight.

Can I use this for Cloudflare Enterprise features?

The controls are written for features documented as available across plans, but some features Cloudflare documents (for example account-level rulesets and some rate limiting options) depend on plan. Mark a control N/A if your plan does not offer it.
