Instagram Privacy Settings Lab: Weigh the Trade-offs

A busy account, a stream of follow requests and a dozen menus. Decide whether to go private, who can tag and message you, how to handle comments and people who will not stop, which apps keep access and how to protect the login, and see what each choice gives up. Prefer to read first? Start with the Instagram privacy settings checklist.

Template & sample scenario. A fictional rehearsal built on common real-world patterns, not a record of any real organisation, audit or deal. Generated from a PlayCISO template as a starting point: it is not legal, audit, certification, investment or professional advice. Review, adapt and validate it for your organisation before you rely on it.

You are Sam Okafor. You have had an Instagram account since school and it has hundreds of followers you barely know. Your cousin Lena says "just go private and block everyone", but each setting trades something away. Across 11 decisions you choose who sees your posts, who can tag and message you, how to handle comments and people who will not stop, which apps keep access and how to protect the login. Everything here is fictional. Each call is scored 0 to 10, with reasons based on Instagram's own help pages. Menu names change, so the official pages stay the final word.

This is the guided version: a yellow flash shows where to click and a bar says what to do. Switch to Free play any time.

GuidedPress the highlighted Start button. You can edit the names above first, or keep the samples.

TL;DR

What this lab is

5 points
  • A scenario lab: a fictional person tidies an Instagram account and has to decide who sees, messages and tags them.
  • You make 11 scored decisions: private or public, tags and mentions, message requests, stories and Close Friends, activity status and location, Hidden Words, Restrict and Block, linked apps, sign-in security and a teen account.
  • The reasoning follows Instagram's own help and safety pages. Menu names change often, so the official pages stay the final word.
  • Free to play. You get a final score and grade, a shareable scorecard and next-step links. A downloadable debrief is available with a paid plan.
  • Defensive and educational only. Every person and app is fictional and no real accounts or links appear.

Frequently asked questions

Is this connected to my real Instagram account?

No. The people and the app are fictional. Nothing connects to Instagram or to your account, and nothing you choose changes a real setting.

Where does the advice come from?

From Instagram's Help Center and safety pages on private accounts, tags and mentions, Hidden Words, Restrict, Block, apps and websites and Teen Accounts. The blog checklist links each page so you can check the current steps.

Does a private account hide everything?

No. Instagram says people must send a follow request to see your posts and that your posts stay off hashtag pages, but other details such as your profile name and picture can still be seen, and anyone you approve can screenshot.

What is the difference between Restrict and Block?

Instagram says a restricted person's comments on your posts are visible only to them, while a blocked account cannot see your profile, posts or Stories. Neither is notified.

How is it scored?

Each decision scores 0 to 10 and the final score is the share of the maximum. Every answer comes with a short reason, so you learn why a choice helps or hurts.
