Morse Code Studio

Translate text to Morse and back, then hear it and see it. A Web Audio oscillator beeps your message at a speed and tone you choose, a light panel blinks it in lockstep, and a built-in chart covers every letter, digit and the prosigns that matter (SOS, CQ, AR, SK). It all runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded. For a bare one-shot conversion, the simpler translator is linked below.

TL;DR

What this tool does

  • A free, in-browser Morse code studio: translate text to Morse and Morse back to text live, both directions.
  • Hear it — a Web Audio oscillator beeps your message at a settable speed (5–30 WPM) and tone (300–1000 Hz) using standard PARIS dit/dah/gap timing.
  • See it — a light panel blinks the Morse in time with the beeps (and automatically stays still if your system prefers reduced motion).
  • A built-in reference chart covers A–Z, 0–9 and common prosigns like SOS, CQ, AR and SK.
  • Everything runs locally in your browser — no account, no upload, nothing leaves the page.

Why this matters

Morse code is the original digital protocol: an alphabet reduced to two symbols and precise timing, able to cross any medium that can be switched on and off — a key, a lamp, a buzzer, a flashlight. Learning it by hearing the rhythm and watching the flashes, rather than reading dots on a page, is how operators have always learned it, because the brain decodes Morse as sound patterns, not as text.

For security professionals it is also a clean, tangible model of a low-bandwidth signalling channel: the same on/off keying that spells SOS on a lamp is exactly the pattern a covert channel uses to leak data over a status LED or a timing side channel. Understanding how little bandwidth it takes to carry a message is the first step to thinking about where unmonitored channels hide — which the covert-channel lab below explores from a defender's point of view.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Morse Code Studio?

A free, browser-based tool that converts text to International Morse code and decodes Morse back to text in real time. Beyond plain conversion it plays your message as audio beeps through the Web Audio API and blinks it on a visual light panel, both using the standard PARIS timing where a dash is three times a dot. You can set the speed in words per minute and the tone frequency. It is a richer companion to the simpler Morse Code Translator.

How does the speed (WPM) and timing work?

Morse timing is measured in units: a dot is one unit, a dash is three, the gap inside a character is one unit, the gap between characters is three, and the gap between words is seven. The standard reference word is PARIS, so one unit equals 1200 divided by the words-per-minute setting, in milliseconds. Raising WPM shortens every unit proportionally; the tone frequency only changes the pitch of the beep, not the timing.

Does any audio or text get sent to a server?

No. Translation, the audio oscillator and the flashing light all run entirely in your browser with no network calls. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored. The audio context is created only when you press play and is released when you leave the page.

Why does the light stop flashing sometimes?

If your operating system is set to reduce motion, the studio honours that preference and keeps the light steady while still playing the audio, so the tool never triggers motion sensitivity. You can re-enable animation by turning off reduced-motion in your system accessibility settings.
