Smart Home Security Lab: Set Up a Home Safely
New router, new camera, a speaker and a drawer of old gadgets. Walk through the settings, weigh the convenience against the risk, and see which choices actually close the door. Prefer to read first? Start with the smart home security checklist.
You are Sam Okafor, setting up a smart home with Jordan in a two-bedroom flat. Across 11 decisions you work through the router, the guest network, a camera, a speaker, updates and what to do with old devices. Most choices have a trade-off, and the feedback says why. Everything here is fictional. Each call is scored 0 to 10, with reasons based on CISA and UK NCSC guidance.

TL;DRWhat this lab is
5 points
- A scenario lab: a fictional person sets up a new smart home and you make the settings calls, from the router login to selling an old speaker.
- You make 11 scored decisions: router login, Wi-Fi encryption, remote management and UPnP, the guest network, a camera, remote viewing, a speaker, updates, support dates and factory resets.
- The reasoning follows CISA's home Wi-Fi guidance and the UK NCSC's guidance on smart devices in the home. Trade-offs are explained, not hidden.
- Free to play. You get a final score and grade, a shareable scorecard and next-step links. A downloadable debrief is available with a paid plan.
- Defensive and educational only. Every person and device is fictional and no real accounts or links appear.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a real home or real device?
No. The people and devices are fictional. Nothing connects to your router, camera or any account.
Where does the advice come from?
From CISA's home Wi-Fi guidance and the UK National Cyber Security Centre's page on smart devices in the home. The blog checklist links both so you can check the current wording.
Should smart devices go on a guest network?
CISA advises connecting smart home devices that only need internet access to the guest network. The trade-off is that some devices must share a network with your phone or hub, so test each one after moving it.
What should I do before selling a smart device?
The NCSC says to factory reset it first, which should also remove your personal data. Removing it from your app account is a sensible extra step.
How is it scored?
Each decision scores 0 to 10 and the final score is the share of the maximum. Every answer comes with a short reason, so you learn why a choice helps or hurts.
