TikTok Privacy Settings Lab: Weigh the Trade-offs
A growing audience, rude comments and a dozen menus. Decide whether to go private, who can comment, remix and message you, what gets suggested and downloaded, which apps keep access and how to protect the login, and see what each choice gives up. Prefer to read first? Start with the TikTok privacy settings checklist.
You are Maya Ortiz. You post cooking videos on TikTok for friends and a few hundred other people, and your cousin Dev says "just set everything to off". Each setting trades something away. Across 12 decisions you choose who can watch, comment, remix and message you, what gets suggested and downloaded, how your ad data and location are handled, which apps keep access, how the login is protected and what a younger relative should have. Everything here is fictional. Each call is scored 0 to 10, with reasons based on TikTok's own help and safety pages. Menu names change, so the official pages stay the final word.
This is the guided version: a yellow flash shows where to click and a bar says what to do. Switch to Free play any time.

TL;DRWhat this lab is
5 points
- A scenario lab: a fictional person tidies a TikTok account and has to decide who can watch, comment, remix and message them.
- You make 12 scored decisions: private or public, comments, Duet and Stitch, messages, suggestions and contact syncing, downloads, ad data, location, third-party apps and viewer-tracker scams, sign-in security, data requests and a teen account.
- The reasoning follows TikTok's own help and safety pages. Menu names change often, so the official pages stay the final word.
- Free to play. You get a final score and grade, a shareable scorecard and next-step links. A downloadable debrief is available with a paid plan.
- Defensive and educational only. Every person and app is fictional and no real accounts or links appear.
Frequently asked questions
Is this connected to my real TikTok account?
No. The people and the apps are fictional. Nothing connects to TikTok or to your account, and nothing you choose changes a real setting.
Where does the advice come from?
From TikTok's help centre and Safety Center pages on private accounts, comments, Duet and Stitch, messages, Family Pairing, 2-step verification and data requests. The blog checklist links each page so you can check the current steps.
Does a private account hide everything?
No. TikTok's help material says only followers you approve can watch your videos, but your username, picture and bio can still be seen, and a comment you leave elsewhere is visible there.
Can an app show me who viewed my profile?
Pages we reviewed disagree on whether TikTok offers any profile-view feature itself, so check its help pages. A third-party app that asks for your login or payment is a common scam.
How is it scored?
Each decision scores 0 to 10 and the final score is the share of the maximum. Every answer comes with a short reason, so you learn why a choice helps or hurts.
