WhatsApp Privacy Settings Lab: Weigh the Trade-offs
New phone, fresh WhatsApp, dozens of switches. Decide who sees your photo and last seen, who can add you to groups, what to lock and how to back up, and see what each choice gives up. Prefer to read first? Start with the WhatsApp privacy settings checklist.
You are Marcus Webb, setting up WhatsApp on a new phone. Your cousin Tilly says "just lock everything down", but every setting has a cost. Across 11 decisions you decide who sees what, who can add you to groups, what to lock, how calls and backups are handled. Everything here is fictional. Each call is scored 0 to 10, with the reason based on WhatsApp's own help pages. Menu paths change, so the official pages stay the final word.
This is the guided version: a yellow flash shows where to click and a bar says what to do. Switch to Free play any time.

TL;DRWhat this lab is
5 points
- A scenario lab: a fictional person sets up WhatsApp on a new phone and has to decide what to share, lock and back up.
- You make 11 scored decisions: Privacy Checkup, last seen, profile photo, who can add you to groups, read receipts, disappearing messages, two-step verification, app and chat lock, calls, blocking and backups.
- The reasoning follows WhatsApp's own Help Center pages on privacy settings, account security, disappearing messages, blocking and encrypted backup.
- Free to play. You get a final score and grade, a shareable scorecard and next-step links. A downloadable debrief is available with a paid plan.
- Defensive and educational only. Every person and group is fictional and no real accounts or links appear.
Frequently asked questions
Is this connected to my real WhatsApp account?
No. The people and the group are fictional. Nothing connects to WhatsApp or to your account, and nothing you choose changes a real setting.
Where does the advice come from?
From WhatsApp's own Help Center pages on changing privacy settings, last seen and online, account security tips, disappearing messages, blocking and encrypted backups. The blog checklist links each page so you can check the current steps for your version of the app.
If I hide my last seen, can I still see other people's?
WhatsApp says that if you do not share your last seen or online, you cannot see other users'. It is one of the trade-offs the lab asks you to weigh.
Do disappearing messages guarantee a message is gone?
No. WhatsApp's help page says a forwarded message will not disappear in a chat where the feature is off, and a backup made before a message disappeared keeps it.
How is it scored?
Each decision scores 0 to 10 and the final score is the share of the maximum. Every answer comes with a short reason, so you learn why a choice helps or hurts.
