Cyber Security Engineer: Role, Skills, Salary, Path

A cyber security engineer builds and maintains the technical controls that protect an organisation: network and cloud defences, identity and access, logging and detection, and secure configuration. The difference from an analyst is that engineers build and fix; analysts watch and respond.

BLS has no separate series for security engineers. Many are counted in Information Security Analysts, whose median pay was $129,180 a year in May 2025; others are classed as network architects or software developers (figures below).

What the role covers

The job title is used loosely. The common thread is that you own a technical control end to end: design it, build it, measure it and fix it when it fails.

FlavourMain workPractise it
Cloud security engineerIAM and permissions, storage and network policy, key management, posture checks.IAM Privilege Escalation Lab, Cloud Posture Lab, CIS AWS benchmark checklist
Network security engineerFirewall rule design, segmentation, VPN, traffic inspection.Firewall Lab, Security Group Auditor
Information / IT security engineerEndpoint, identity and patching controls; standards and hardening baselines.MFA Bypass Lab, Email Authentication Lab
SOC / detection engineerLog pipelines, detection rules, automation for the SOC.Detection Lab, log triage

Skills employers ask for

  • Systems and networking: operating systems, TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, and how traffic actually flows.
  • One cloud platform in depth: identity, networking and logging on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud.
  • Scripting: enough Python, PowerShell or Bash to automate checks and parse logs.
  • Secure design thinking: start from a threat model; see the threat model tool.
  • Writing and influence: engineers persuade other teams to change things. A clear risk note beats a clever fix nobody adopts.

Pay: what BLS can and cannot tell you

There is no official series for the title. The closest groups, from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook (May 2025 wages, accessed 3 November 2026):

BLS groupMedianLowest 10% underHighest 10% over
Information Security Analysts$129,180$75,090$199,850
Computer Network Architects$134,050$79,900$202,680
Software Developers$135,980$82,460$214,670

How to become one

  1. Start in a technical role. BLS notes that many information security analysts first work in IT, often as a network and computer systems administrator, and lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education (some enter with a high school diploma plus training and certifications).
  2. Add security depth on the job. Volunteer for hardening, patching, access reviews or cloud-permission clean-ups.
  3. Pick one certification that matches the flavour. Security+ for breadth, a cloud certification for cloud roles. See the certifications guide and the roadmap.
  4. Keep proof you can describe. A lab or a configuration review you can walk through is stronger than a list of tools. Tune the CV with Resume Review and practise answers in interview prep.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cyber security engineer?

A cyber security engineer designs, builds and maintains the technical controls that protect an organisation: firewalls and network segmentation, identity and access management, cloud guardrails, logging and detection pipelines, and secure build processes. Where an analyst watches and responds, an engineer builds and fixes the thing that is being watched. Titles vary a lot between employers, so read the duties in the job ad.

What does a cyber security engineer do?

Typical work is configuring and hardening systems, building automation for patching and detection, reviewing architecture and cloud configurations, writing the technical standards other teams follow, and helping respond when a control fails. Day to day this is more engineering and scripting than alert triage.

What is the difference between a security engineer and a security analyst?

Analysts operate: they monitor alerts, investigate and escalate. Engineers build: they design and implement the controls and tooling, and fix root causes. The two overlap, and small teams often combine them. The SOC analyst guide covers the analyst side.

How much does a cyber security engineer make?

BLS has no occupation called security engineer, so we cannot quote a single official figure. Many security engineers are counted in Information Security Analysts (median $129,180 in May 2025); others are counted as Computer Network Architects (median $134,050) or Software Developers (median $135,980). Treat those as reference bands and check real job ads for your location.

How do I become a cyber security engineer?

Most people arrive from a systems administration, network, cloud or software role and add security depth. Build a base in networking, operating systems and one cloud platform, learn scripting, and practise securing real configurations. A recognised entry certification helps with screening; a specialist one (cloud, for example) helps for cloud security engineer roles.

What is a cloud security engineer?

A cloud security engineer applies the same engineering to cloud platforms: identity and permissions, network controls, storage policies, key management, logging and posture management. Misconfigured permissions and exposed storage are common findings, which is why practising on IAM and storage policy matters.

What does a network security engineer do?

A network security engineer designs and runs firewalls, segmentation, VPN and remote access, intrusion detection and traffic controls, and reviews rule sets for risk. It is the oldest branch of the role and still the base for many security engineers.

What is a SOC engineer?

A SOC engineer builds and maintains the tooling a security operations centre depends on: log pipelines, SIEM and EDR integrations, detection rules and automation. It sits between the analyst and the platform team. Detection engineering is a closely related title.
