Alibaba Cloud Security Checklist: Score Your Account

This is an interactive Alibaba Cloud security checklist. Mark 30 controls In place, Partial, Missing or N/A and get a weighted score, a score per domain and your top gaps, each with the Alibaba Cloud documentation behind it.

Answers stay in your browser. For the reference design these controls belong to, read secure Alibaba Cloud architecture; to practise, try the Alibaba Cloud Security Lab.

1. Account and identities

The main account, RAM users and sign-in.

  • The Alibaba Cloud account is used only for rare tasks, with its password and MFA device secured; daily work uses RAM identities.

  • Each person has their own RAM identity (or signs in through SSO); nobody shares a login.

  • MFA is required for console logon, with passkeys for high-risk users.

  • Staff federate through your identity provider using SAML 2.0 or OIDC where you have one.

  • Permissions are granted through RAM user groups by job function.

2. AccessKey pairs and STS

Long-term versus temporary credentials.

  • No AccessKey pair exists for the Alibaba Cloud account.

  • Applications and CI use RAM roles with STS tokens rather than long-term AccessKey pairs.

  • Where an AccessKey is unavoidable, each application has its own RAM user and key with least-privilege permissions.

  • The "Allow users to manage AccessKey" setting is off in production.

  • You can disable and delete a leaked AccessKey quickly and detect leaked or long-inactive keys.

3. RAM policies and least privilege

What each identity can actually do.

  • Custom policies grant only the actions and resources each job needs, rather than broad administrator policies.

  • Sensitive actions use conditions such as source CIDR block or MFA.

  • Resource groups scope permissions to a project or environment.

  • Explicit Deny statements guard actions that must never happen, knowing Deny overrides Allow.

  • Permissions are reviewed with permission auditing or access analysis, and unused or over-privileged identities are trimmed.

4. ActionTrail and detection

Evidence and risk visibility.

  • A trail delivers management events to Simple Log Service or OSS, so history is kept beyond 90 days.

  • The trail records all management events including read events.

  • Data events are recorded for buckets that hold sensitive data.

  • Security Center is deployed on servers and its findings (vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, identity risks) have owners.

  • You treat Security Center as one layer and keep patching and least privilege.

5. OSS and secrets

Storage exposure and credentials in code.

  • Block Public Access is on at the account level.

  • No bucket uses public-read or public-read-write unless there is a documented reason.

  • Bucket policies use fixed principals, not "*", and you check them with GetBucketPolicyStatus.

  • Database passwords and API credentials live in KMS secrets, not in code or wikis.

  • Sensitive data uses server-side encryption where your requirements call for key control.

6. Security groups and WAF

What can reach the servers and the site.

  • Security groups allow only the ports and sources needed; SSH and database ports are not open to 0.0.0.0/0.

  • Instances that do not need to talk to each other are isolated (internal communication policy or enterprise security groups).

  • Rule priorities are understood and redundant rules are cleaned up.

  • Public web applications sit behind WAF in enforcement mode after a monitor-mode tuning period.

  • The origin server cannot be reached directly, bypassing WAF.

Your top gaps

TL;DR

What this is

5 points
  • A self-assessment of 30 Alibaba Cloud controls in 6 domains: account and identities, AccessKey pairs and STS, RAM policies, ActionTrail and detection, OSS and secrets, and security groups and WAF.
  • Mark each control In place, Partial, Missing or N/A. You get a weighted 0 to 100 score overall, a score per domain and your top gaps.
  • Each control carries a short reason and a link to the Alibaba Cloud documentation it comes from. Our own reasoning is labelled PlayCISO practice.
  • Runs in your browser; answers stay in local storage and nothing is sent to PlayCISO. Markdown and PDF export of the report is available with a paid plan.
  • It is not an audit and not a benchmark; it connects to nothing in your account.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Alibaba Cloud Security Checklist cover?

It covers 30 controls in 6 domains drawn from Alibaba Cloud documentation: the main account and RAM identities, MFA and SSO, AccessKey pairs and STS, RAM policies, ActionTrail and Security Center, OSS Block Public Access and KMS secrets, and security groups and WAF.

How is the score calculated?

Each control has a weight of 1 to 3. In place counts as full weight, Partial as half, Missing as zero, and N/A is left out. A domain score is the weighted share of its answered controls and the overall score is the weighted share across all answered controls. Unanswered controls are not scored.

Does the tool connect to my Alibaba Cloud account?

No. Nothing connects to Alibaba Cloud and no AccessKey pairs are requested. You answer from what you know and the score is computed in your browser, so it is safe to use while reviewing a real account.

Are my answers stored or sent anywhere?

Answers are kept in this browser's local storage and are not sent to PlayCISO. The Markdown and PDF reports are built in your browser.

Why is the account AccessKey weighted so highly?

Alibaba Cloud says an Alibaba Cloud account AccessKey pair has full permissions on all resources by default, that a compromise carries extremely high risk, and strongly recommends that you do not create or use one. The checklist gives its absence the top weight.

Does the checklist cover VPC, Cloud Firewall and Cloud Config?

Not in this version. We did not fetch and verify Alibaba Cloud documentation for those products while writing it, so we did not assert controls about them. Security groups, WAF, Security Center, OSS, KMS, RAM and ActionTrail are covered from pages we read.
