Alibaba Cloud Security Lab: RAM, STS, OSS, WAF
This is a hands-on Alibaba Cloud security lab. You take over a fictional company's Alibaba Cloud account and make 12 scored decisions on RAM, AccessKey pairs and STS, policies, ActionTrail, OSS public access, security groups, KMS, WAF and Security Center.
Feedback cites Alibaba Cloud documentation. Read the secure Alibaba Cloud architecture guide for the design behind the answers, or score your own account with the Alibaba Cloud Security Checklist.
You are Wei Zhang, the cloud security lead at Lotus Harbour Trading, a fictional company that runs its Asia-Pacific web shop on Alibaba Cloud: ECS servers, an OSS bucket of customer documents and a handful of scripts and apps. Across 12 decisions you secure the account: the main account and RAM users, AccessKey pairs and STS, RAM policies, ActionTrail, OSS Block Public Access and ACLs, security groups, KMS secrets, WAF and Security Center. Each call is scored 0 to 10 and the feedback cites the Alibaba Cloud documentation behind it. All names, ids and addresses are invented (example.com and documentation IP ranges).

TL;DRWhat this is
5 points
- A scenario lab where you secure a fictional company's Alibaba Cloud account: ECS servers, an OSS bucket of customer documents, and scripts and apps that call the APIs.
- You make 12 scored decisions on: the main account versus RAM users and SSO, AccessKey pairs versus RAM roles and STS, cross-account access, RAM policy design, a leaked AccessKey, ActionTrail trails and data events, OSS Block Public Access and ACLs, bucket policies, security groups, KMS secrets, WAF monitor mode and Security Center.
- Each decision scores 0 to 10. Feedback cites the Alibaba Cloud documentation read on 4 November 2026. Our own reasoning is labelled PlayCISO practice.
- Free to play. All names, ids and addresses are invented. The lab teaches what to set and why; it contains no attack steps.
- Read the secure Alibaba Cloud architecture guide for the reference design, or score your own account with the Alibaba Cloud Security Checklist.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Alibaba Cloud Security Lab teach?
It teaches how to put identity and data controls on an Alibaba Cloud account: using RAM users and roles instead of the main account, replacing AccessKey pairs with STS tokens, writing least-privilege RAM policies, recording evidence with ActionTrail, keeping OSS buckets private with Block Public Access, restricting security group rules, storing secrets in KMS, and layering WAF and Security Center.
Why is using the Alibaba Cloud account AccessKey scored so low?
Alibaba Cloud says an account AccessKey pair has full permissions on all resources by default, that a compromise is extremely high risk, and strongly recommends not creating or using one. A RAM user AccessKey inherits only that user's permissions, and temporary STS credentials expire automatically.
How long does ActionTrail keep events?
By default ActionTrail retains management events for 90 days and does not collect data events such as reading an object from OSS. To keep events longer or record data events you create a trail that delivers events to Simple Log Service, OSS or, for single-account trails, MaxCompute; storage is charged by the destination service.
What does OSS Block Public Access do?
It prevents anonymous access to OSS resources at the account, bucket, access point or Object FC Access Point level. When enabled, existing public permissions are ignored and new ones cannot be created. Account-level settings take priority over lower levels.
Is WAF monitor mode safe to leave on?
Monitor mode logs alerts for suspicious traffic without blocking it, which Alibaba Cloud suggests for new applications so you can tune out false positives before enforcing. It does not block, so leaving it on permanently gives you visibility but no protection.
