Operational Resilience / BIA Lab

One question runs the whole drill: how long could we survive X being down? Sit in the resilience committee and make the calls a board and a regulator would judge — start from the critical business services, not a list of servers; set an RTO and RPO for each, sized to an impact tolerance the board signs off; map how impact grows over an hour, a day, a week; find the single points of failure and concentration; and prove recovery by testing it. Each decision shows you why.

Pair this drill with the free Business Impact Analysis & Resilience Board Summary — the document that records the critical-service inventory, recovery objectives and investment asks you practise here. Educational drill.

The real job. More noise, a tighter clock.

0sPro

You sit in the resilience committee for a company mapping how it would survive its critical services going down. Work 10 board-room decisions — answer “how long could we survive X being down?” the way a board and a regulator would judge it, then see why. You are graded on how many you get right against the clock.

TL;DR

What this lab is

  • A free, browser-based decision drill on operational resilience and business impact analysis (BIA): work ~14 board-room decisions about how long the business could survive a critical service being down.
  • Resilience starts from the critical BUSINESS SERVICES the company delivers — not a list of servers — then the RTO and RPO each service needs, sized to an impact tolerance the board signs off.
  • You practise the real traps: impact grows non-linearly over time (1h vs 1 day vs 1 week), single points of failure and concentration, untested backups, immutable/offline copies against ransomware, vendor and fourth-party dependencies, and DORA-style operational-resilience expectations.
  • Each decision reveals why the board-defensible answer is right, and you are graded S–D on how many you call correctly against the clock.
  • Educational decision drill. Pair it with the free Business Impact Analysis & Resilience Board Summary template.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Operational Resilience / BIA Lab?

A free, in-browser decision simulation that puts you in a resilience committee answering the board question "how long could we survive X being down?". You work through board-room decisions — which are the critical business services, what RTO and RPO each one needs, where the single points of failure are, how to justify continuity investment — and each has a single board-defensible answer, revealed after you lock in your call.

What is the difference between RTO and RPO?

RTO (recovery time objective) is how fast you must restore a service after it goes down. RPO (recovery point objective) is how much recent data you can afford to lose — how far back a restore can set you. They are different questions: a service might need a two-hour RTO but tolerate only minutes of lost data. A business impact analysis sets both, per critical service.

Is this a BIA methodology?

It is an educational drill that rehearses the decisions a business impact analysis forces — identifying critical services, setting recovery objectives and an impact tolerance, mapping dependencies and single points of failure, and prioritising investment. It orients you to the thinking; apply the specifics to your own organisation and obligations with qualified advisers.

Who is it for?

CISOs, COOs, business continuity and resilience leads, risk officers, and board directors — anyone who has to answer how long a critical service could be down before it causes unacceptable harm, and who wants to rehearse the call before a real outage.
